Please join us, Monday, February 2m 7pm, at Amnesia Bar for a rally to Stop American Apparel from moving in at 988 Valencia Street. This isn't an attack on American Apparel but American Apparel is a mega-chain with over 200 outlets in more than 16 countries and three stores in San Francisco already. If we let them open on Valencia they will serve as a beachhead for Urban Outfitters, Starbucks, and The Gap. We must send a message to City Planning that we want to keep Valencia Street as it is now, a corridor of outstanding independent businesses.

So please come out February 2. We'll have readings from Daphne Gottlieb, Peter Orner, and Daniel Alarcon, music by Dan Weis, and comedy by Nato Green, with more music to follow later in the night. We'll also have a bank of typewriters so you can write a letter to the planning commission on the spot and information on how else you can help, including attending the planning commission hearing February 5 at 2:30 in City Hall (previously 1:30).

San Francisco-based performance poet Daphne Gottlieb is one of the most innovative voices in American poetry today, having carved out a space for herself out on the distant intersection of avant-garde verse, feminist theory, and popular culture. Her latest volume, Kissing Dead Girls, is another gleeful, high-speed smear of mordant humor, historical mash-up, and feral exploration of bodies, hearts, fluids, emotions, and scars. If in total the book is less startling and focused than Final Girl, her award-winning 2003 collection, it is because here Gottlieb is expanding her themes and experimenting with a broader set of poetic forms.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Authorities in the San Francisco Bay area say they believe it was a hate crime.

Richmond police say about a week and a half ago a woman says she was jumped by four men after she got out of her car. She says they taunted her for being a lesbian, then repeatedly raped her before leaving her naked outside an abandoned apartment building.

Police in Richmond, Calif., aren't saying why they think the woman was singled out except to say the victim lives openly with her partner, and her car has a rainbow gay pride sticker on it.

A police spokesman says "The level of trauma, physical and emotional, this victim has suffered is extreme."

Richmond police are offering a $10,000 award for information leading to the arrest of the attackers.

Duanna Johnson broke the news in June when videotape of her (alleged) beating by Memphis police was leaked (youtube). According to Johnson, the provocation for the (alleged) assault was asking to be called by name rather than as "faggot" or "he/she." Involved in a lawsuit against the Memphis Police Department, she was murdered on Sunday. Answering a call for donations for funeral expenses, the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition raised $5,300 in four hours. There are nagging questions about the circumstances of the case and the level of coverage this case has received in comparison to Prop. 8 protests. (More coverage: bilerico, feministing, the HRC, questioning transphobia.)

As forclosures rise, so do tent cities filled with Americans. Across the country, tent cities are rising everywhere. From California, where foreclosures are taking over 60,000 homes per month, to Vegas, where hungry children sleep in the glittered dust of the wealthy, to St. Petersburg, Florida where the cops are destroying the tents of the homeless to make them leave the city, to the suburbs, homelessness, hunger, and poverty are on the rise. The government's response? Change how "homeless" is defined, so that the numbers appear to be decreasing at the same time that tents are springing up all over the country.
This is a tragedy of epic proportions, and figuring out how to help can be overwhelming. What can you do?

Donate to a local shelter. Donate to a food bank. Volunteer at a local charity. Build a house.

And always remember, that there but for the grace of something, go you. Treat the homeless with respect. Don't just ignore the problem.
